Passing of Mark Wicken

October 24, 1944 – November 5, 2024

(added November 18, 2024)

I'm sad to inform you that Mark Wicken passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. My recollection is that Mark began his drum corps career with the Port Credit Saints before joining the Toronto Optimists. He drummed with The Optimists from 1962 through 1964.

Obituary

Mark died at home, peacefully, after a seven-month battle with cancer. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 40 years, Nonie, and his sons Andrew (Heather) and Chris (Maddie), grandchildren Charlotte, Oliver and Alice, grand-dogs Ted and Twyla, cherished extended family Nancy and Courtney (Tim), and innumerable lifelong friends.

Mark grew up in Port Credit with father Wally (piano prodigy), mother Ella (the “family rock”), and was pre-deceased by his sister Janis (Bob).

Graduate University of Toronto (Victoria College, Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity) 1967, and recent recipient of the University of Toronto Arbor Award for outstanding volunteer service to the University.

Mark began his career in advertising and worked in Toronto, Chicago and Saudi Arabia. He was later an educator at the International Academy of Design, Toronto Film School, and a guest lecturer at numerous other institutions. In retirement, he was the author of the book “Remember Me!”:a passion project to instill invaluable lessons and strategies for new graduates in job search and career development. His aptitudes were enormous: professional drummer, incredible chef, martini mixologist, and entertainer-he was inducted into the Academy of Magical Arts at The Magic Castle in Los Angeles in 2015 as a recognition of his talents as a magician. Mark served on the Board of Directors of Music Fest Canada from 1992 until 2018, becoming its President in 2006. He played an integral role in transforming and progressing this organization which hosts the largest education-based music festival in North America.

We would like to acknowledge the tremendous and compassionate care of all of the nurses, doctors, and staff at St. Michael’s Hospital, and the team from the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care or the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.

Surrounded by her 3 sons, Josephine died peacefully on March 25, 2023, at the age of 83. Widow to devoted husband Ronald. She was the daughter of Leo and Belinda. Whether it was hours spent around a campfire or just sitting around with friends or family. For years she was an active member of the Toronto Signals marching band and supporter to the Optimist Alumni Corps. Music followed her to retirement home living, where she would perform on the piano, for the residents, on a regular basis.

Passing of Noel Bramley

(added March 22, 2023)

Obituary

It is with great sadness that I announce the unexpected death of my friend and brother Noel Bramley on March 16, 2023. He was a baritone horn player in The Optimists. Remaining a Corps enthusiast the rest of his life, Noel enjoyed a very long friendship with Steve Bailey of De La Salle; they, quite often, crossed continents to meet up.

Recently, fellow Optimist, Mel Dey, forwarded to us a video of "a modern Drum Corps" which Noel and I enjoyed. This was followed days later by us listening to a recording of mid-fifties New York Skyliners and St. Vincents Cadets of Bayonne N.J.  Yes, enthusiasts to the end. Fond memories indeed. The Drum Corps movement, a facet in a colourful life.

Noel is survived by his wife, Carol, daughters Gemma and Melissa and 4 grandchildren.

Her father, John Longstreet, had marched with the Western Tech Trumpet Band and was once the drum major of Toronto Signals Band while her grandfather was one of the founders of Second Signals. As a result, Marilyn’s primary connection was with Sigs.

In her younger years Marilyn marched with the Etobicoke Crusaders. Later on she marched with the Optimist Alumni when they were performing field shows. Sometimes she was part of the Honour Guard; however, she also played cymbals.

Passing of Art Tamaki

(added February 23, 2022)

It is with much sadness that I must let you know that Art Tamaki passed on February 17, 2022. Art marched with Toronto Optimists from 1965 thru 1967 when he aged out. Art played French Horn.

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Arthur (“Art”) Eiji Tamaki on February 17th, 2022, at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.

Much loved husband of Thelma Tamaki for 47 years, wonderful father to Lisa (Steve McGran) and Julie (Jeff Vanderby), and very proud grandfather of Owen McGran. Art was predeceased by his loving parents Fumi and Hideo Tamaki. Brother of Danny, Naomi (Tad), Sachi (Ken), George (Lynn), and Diane. Brother-in-law to Jim (deceased), Debbie (Ken), David (Tammy), Heather (Gary, deceased). Much-loved uncle to Stacey, Keri (John), Jeff, Jarrett (Kirsty), Leslie (Marc), Corbin (Melissa), Andrea (Matt), Tamara (Brian), Jenna, Leah, Erika, and Rachel (Ben).  Friend to so, so many.

Art was born on January 29, 1946, on a beet farm in Lorette, Manitoba during the expulsion of Japanese Canadians from the West Coast of Canada. The family’s love and determination allowed them to persevere through difficult times and Art’s hard work and talent for numbers enabled him to transcend those humble origins.

Art spent his early years at Queen Alexandra Middle School in Toronto (a school he would support later in life by creating an annual academic award for its students) and attended Riverdale Collegiate. A lover of music, Art was an enthusiastic member of the Toronto Optimists Drum and Bugle Corps.  He was a long time member and active participant in the St James Bond United Church community.

Art studied Commerce and Finance at the University of Toronto at Innis College (1969). He received his CA designation at Clarkson, Gordon & Co. and spent over 24 years of his professional life at The Bata Shoe Company, ending his career as global Chief Financial Officer.

At 57, he decided to retire early, so that he and Thelma could enjoy life to its fullest. For 19 years, Art spent summers at the cottage he had proudly built himself, winters in Naples trying to golf, and spring and fall exploring the world on countless trips.

Art will be missed for his quick wit and sly sense of humour, his kindness, intelligence, and integrity, and his ever-present smile. “He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it…” (Bessie A. Stanley)

We will all miss him so very much.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation. Art felt strongly about giving back to the community, particularly to those less fortunate.  Red Door Family Shelter and Haven Toronto are two organizations local to Art and Thelma that do this well. Alternatively, you could make a donation to the charity of your choice in his memory.

Service Details

Due to Covid, a private service will be held for his family at 4pm on Saturday, February 26th at Humphrey Funeral Home.

The service on the 26th will be live-streamed here for those who would like to attend virtually.

Per Art’s request, a “Celebration of Life” (or, in his own words, a party) will be held this summer for all his friends and family who provided him so much joy in life.

Passing of Vern Johansson

Photo of Vern Johansson in 1969

(added January 5, 2022)

With sadness we let you know that Vern Johansson, passed on January 4, 2022.

Vern began his drum corps career as a drummer with the Bantam Optimists. He served as assistant Drum Major for the Toronto Optimists in 1964 and Drum Major from 1966 through 1970. Vern was also one of the founders of the Optimists Alumni, serving as their Drum Major from 2002 through 2004. In 2008 he, once again, served as Drum Major.  Vern will be missed by all who knew him.

Current plans are to have a Celebration of Vern's Life in the Spring. It will be held at the Legion (the old Shrine Temple) on Lakeshore Road. Details will be posted when they are available.

Letter from Vern's Family

Dear friends,

It is with a tremendous amount of sadness that we announce Vern’s passing after a short bout with cancer. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of fifty-one years, Jennifer, by his daughter Adrienne, and his son, Brendan. Vern was also beloved ‘Grumps’, to his grandchildren, Jet and Laurel. He will be greatly missed by his sisters and brother, and of course, by all of his friends.

Vern was a kind, compassionate, hard working, quick witted, uniquely funny, and most importantly, a truly loving man. All of the above attributes (perhaps with the exception of ‘loving’) contributed to his great success in the world of advertising, where he started as a copy writer, working his way up to Creative Director, where he lent his unique perspective to many successful campaigns for notable brands (Honda, Molson Canadian, the Toronto Blue Jays) during the 80s and 90s.

It was during the 90s that Vern discovered a much easier way to make a living, using his strong voice to voice overs for both television and radio. He told you that Mr. Christie makes good cookies, that Canadian Tire was for more than just tires, and he was both a little ashamed and a little proud that he tried to get you to try McDonald’s pizza when they launched that ill-fated endeavour.

After over thirty years living in Etobicoke, Vern and Jennifer moved to the small town of Waterford, ON, where Vern truly embraced small-town living. He took up volunteering and fundraising for local causes, and he discovered a new passion, working in local theatre. From writing and directing short plays for the Waterford Lantern Tour, to acting in a one man show about Mark Twain, Vern loved to perform.

And that love of performing was honed as a teenager when Vern joined his life-long passion, drum corps. As a drummer and then Drum Major for the Toronto Optimists, Vern made many, many memories and life-long friends that he always cherished.

Vern was extremely fond of all the dogs his wife Jennifer showed up with over the years, with Tess the Bernese Mountain Dog being his greatest companion. If you are so inclined, please honour Vern by making a donation to your favourite animal charity.

Due to Covid, there will be no funeral, but we are hoping to have a celebration of Vern’s life sometime in the spring, at the much loved Shrine on Lakeshore Ave. in Toronto. Vern always said this is where he and Jennifer met, whereas Jennifer says they first met at Porter Stadium. It was one of the few things they disagreed on.

Thank you. – Jennifer, Adrienne, and Brendan

Passing of John Coull

Photo of John Coull

(added September 15, 2021)

With sadness we let you know that John Coull, passed on September 2, 2021. John marched with the Toronto Optimists in 1968 and 1969. He later marched withe the Scarborough Firefighters. John's brother, Doug, was a drill instructor with the Seneca Optimists and his sister, Sandy, marched with the Seneca Optimists.

Obituary

Bathed in the warm hues of the rising sun, our beloved John Coull slipped peacefully from this life into the next, following a stroke.

John was born on February 17th, 1951 to parents Margaret and Robert Coull. He grew up in Scarborough, along with his two younger siblings, Doug and Sandra. John discovered a love for music and golf early on, and both passions stayed with him his whole life. In particular, it was jazz and big band that captured his heart strongest; John’s “working music” at home was usually Arturo Sandoval, Maynard Ferguson, or Dizzy Gillespie, at maximum volume.

While John was often busy with work or playing trumpet with Toronto big band The Skyliners, he found time for golf as often as he could. Son Colin shared John’s love for golf, and the two played together as often as they could. John loved the annual “Guys’ Golf Trip to Myrtle” with Colin, Doug, and a few of their friends, spending a week golfing in autumnal Myrtle Beach.

John and Brenda (nee Burke) married in 1974, and had two children: Colin (Tori; Kingston and Kenzie) and Cheryl (Jasen; William). John always made time for his children’s activities, including Colin’s Scouting activities and Cheryl’s many dance competitions; he was always an enthusiastic cheering section! When his grandchildren came along John was just as excited, taking them to playgroups and parks, out for Timbits, and learning everything he could about what they enjoyed. He learned a great deal about superheroes (Kingston), princesses (Kenzie), and Star Wars (William), listening happily to everything they taught him.

After a career with the Toronto Police Service and the Ontario Fire Marshalls office, John spent the final years of work with Origin and Cause, Inc. Always eager to solve the mystery, John’s police skills and fire investigation skills kept him curious and determined, eager to apply what he knew to the pursuit of justice and answers. John retired in 2016, making even more time for his greatest passions: his family, his trumpet, and his golf.

While we are all brokenhearted to say goodbye, we are thankful for the time we had together, and all the beautiful memories. Ever in favour of a morning round of golf, John no doubt had an early tee time the sunny morning he left. Hit ‘em straight! We love you.

Passing of Bill Thorne

(added May 8, 2021)

It is with much sadness that I must let you know that Bill Thorne passed on April 23, 2021. Bill began his drum corps career with the Leaside Lions Jungle Kings before moving to The Optimists after the 1959 season. For many years Bill played baritone with The Optimists. We got our first contras in 1965 and Bill, together with Dave Watt and Paul Thompson, moved to contra. Sadly all three have now passed away.

Obituary

Known to many as “Bill”, William J. Thorne passed away peacefully on April 23, 2021 in Kelowna, B.C. at the age of 76. Bill had recently been diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer, and his health declined rapidly. He spent his last week at Hospice, surrounded by family while receiving top notch care and support.

Bill was born in Toronto and he lived most of his life in the Greater Toronto Area. He graduated with Honours from Alderwood Collegiate Institute in 1962. He went on to study Metallurgy and Materials Science at the University of Toronto, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in 1969. A short time later, Bill enrolled in law school at the University of Toronto, graduating with his LL.B. in 1975. After law school, Bill opened his own law practice, serving clients in the areas of wills, real estate and corporate law. He was also active in a variety of social and charitable organizations, including the Kiwanis Club, Freemasons, and Shriners.

In 1996, Bill and his family moved west to the Okanagan Valley. He continued his legal practice in the area of criminal law, working as Crown Counsel in Kelowna, Penticton, Prince Rupert, Prince George, and Cranbrook. After retiring from government practice, Bill continued his service to the community by representing clients through Legal Aid.

Bill was the eldest son to Dorothy and Joseph Thorne, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother Robert Bruce Thorne (Yvonne), and his sister Sharon Majik. He was preceded in death by his brother Ernest Joseph Thorne. Bill often stated that he was lucky to have been in love twice: he was married to Peggy Jean Thorne (nee Pugh) from 1975 until 1990, and then to Angela Christina Thorne (nee Pennycott) from 1992 until her death in 2015. Bill is survived by his three loving children, Katherine Savoy (Michael), Andrew Thorne (Jennifer) and Jeffery Thorne (Erin), as well as six grandchildren and four nephews.

Bill will be remembered as a dedicated father who always put his family first. He had a life-long love of music, particularly drum and bugle corps, which started when he joined the Toronto Optimists as a young man. Although no longer marching, Bill remained involved with music and played trombone with the Cranbrook Community Concert Band. He loved to ski, golf, and travel. Passing of Rick Cooper

(added October 28, 2020)

It is with much sadness that I inform you about the passing of another Optimist. Rick Cooper (the youngest of the three Cooper brothers) marched in Optimists' colour guard from 1964 through 1970. Passing of Don Daber

With much sadness we let you know that Don Daber passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2019. Don had a tremendous impact on drums corps and, certainly, on the Optimists and its members.

Don discovered Drum Corps and The Optimists in 1960. Over the years he served as corps photographer, publicity manager and corps director of the Optimists. He also began Green Capsule Comments, the newsletter for the Optimists. In addition to doing publicity for the Canadian and Ontario Drum Corps Associations, Don was also on the Board of Directors for these organizations. Don supplied photos and articles to various drum corps publications, designed promotional material, programmes and posters as well as designing the artwork used on record album covers for drum corps records. Needless to say, Don had a tremendous impact on both the Optimists and Drum Corps in general.

Obituary

Don Daber was born in Kirkland Lake, ONT, on May 2, 1929. In 1949 he moved to Toronto to study at the Ontario College of Art (now the Ontario College of Art and Design). After graduating, he began a career in graphics and photography. He moved to Ottawa, ONT, for his first full-time job at Crawley Films where he worked as a graphic artist. In 1956, Don and a partner started their own company called Advertising Art Associates. One of their clients was The Boy Scouts Association of Canada. Don’s connection with the greater drum corps community began in July 1960 when he joined two members of the Optimists executive, Al Baggs and Clare Reid, at a meeting of what was then called the Canadian Trumpet Band Association. As a result of this meeting, he was given a contract to do the artwork and program book for the upcoming championship contest. During his years with the Optimists (Toronto Optimists and Seneca Optimists), Don was a photographer, the publicity director and the corps director (more than once). He was also the creator and editor of GCC, Green Capsule Comments with the Toronto Optimists and Gold Capsule Comments with the Seneca Optimists. Don’s cartoons were frequently included in editions of GCC and many were featured in the tabloid newspaper Drum Corps World between 1971 and 2000, all of which can be found in the pages of Steve Vickers’ book, “The Art of Drum Corps World.” In addition to his work with the Optimists, he found time to work with both the Ontario and Canadian Drum Corps Associations, serving as a photographer, publicity director and board member. In his spare time he wrote articles for various drum corps publications, produced the artwork for a number of record albums (almost three dozen for the Revere, MA-based Fleetwood label) as well as designing posters and doing the program artwork for a variety of contests. Don was highly regarded both in Canada and the United States. His dedication and contributions to youth, primarily in the Drum Corps World will be missed by all who knew him.

Passing of Ron Chong

October 28, 2018

I'm sad to inform you that Ron Chong passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2018.

Prior to joining The Toronto Optimists Ron marched with the Golden Monarchs. Ron joined The Optimists at the end of the 1963 season playing lead Soprano. Ron "aged-out" in 1969 but he continued working with the corps by helping instruct the horn line.

In later years Ron played with Toronto Signals. When the Optimists Alumni was formed Ron joined. Ron left the alumni at the end of the 2014 season to care for Josie, his wife; however, his heart was also with the corps and its members. When the Optimists Alumni went to Indianapolis this past summer, Ron came along for the ride.

Not long after we returned from Indianapolis Ron was diagnosed with cancer. He passed away, at 2:25 this morning (Sunday, October 28, 2018).

The Optimists Alumni extend our sincere condolences to Josie, Ron's wife, to Rawni, Ron's daughter, and to all of the other members of his family.

Passing of Ray Roussel

December 15, 2017

I'm sad to inform you that Ray Roussel passed away on Friday, December 15, 2017.

Ray, together with his brother, Dennis, joined the Optimists in 1967. Their brother, Tim, followed them in 1968 with Rick, the family holdout, joining in 1969. Ray was a great baritone player as well as an excellent corpsman. In 1969 Ray was honoured as Optimists Corpsman of the year.

In 1972 Ray and Paul Thompson wrote a book on Bugle Technique, The book was used by the Optimists and soon many other corps were improving their horn lines by making use of the book and the exercises it contained.

Ray joined the Alumni corps when it began. I believe that Ray was the person who created the first website for the Alumni Corps. While Ray very much wanted to play in the Alumni Corps health problems forced him to leave.

Congratulations to Lorne Ferrazzutti!

May 20, 2017

I just received this message from Vern Johansson.

"I am very happy to announce that Lorne Ferrazzutti is now a member of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame in the Associate category (a division that rewards those who made a valuable contribution to drum corps behind the scenes rather than in the spotlight.) Barry is a member in the same category. Lorne is elated at the news and will be going to Rochester for DCA weekend to be honoured into the Hall.

This is great news for a man who has done so much for the world of drum corps in Canada. I’m proud to have been involved in his election to the Hall."

Passing of Paul Thompson

January 7, 2015

With great sadness I have to tell that another friend and corps member is no longer with us. We have just learned that Paul Thompson has passed away.

Paul began his connection with the Optimists in 1963 working with his father at the Optimists booster table. In 1964 he joined the corps playing Euphonium and, from 1965 until 1969, Paul played Contrabass. After aging out Paul continued working with the corps as an instructor and, at times, took on the role of drum major. Paul and Ray Roussel even wrote a Bugle Manual that was used, not just by the Optimists, but by a number of other corps. In addition, Paul was one of the architects of the 1972 corps which won Optimists 12th Nationals.

When the Alumni corps began Paul was there, doing his best to help out. He assisted with the music, ran the Thursday night music rehearsals until they were cancelled, obtained the rights for us to play our music and, until health issues forced him to stop, played contrabass.

Paul will be missed by all of those who knew him.

Passing of Larry Cheevers

February 2, 1939 — September 6, 2014

Photo of: Larry Cheevers

It is with much sadness the we have to tell you that another former Optimist is no longer with us. We have just learned that Larry Cheevers passed away on Saturday, September 6th.  Larry started in the boy scout band, moved to Opti-Corps in 1956 and played with the Toronto Optimists until 1960, when he aged out.

Obituary

Larry was born in Toronto and moved to Willowdale in his early teens. He was actively involved as a member of the Anglican Young Peoples Association and greatly enjoyed planning their activities. One of his fondest memories was of his time spent in the Toronto Optimists Drum and Bugle Corps from 1958 to 1960 when they were the Canadian National Junior Drum Corps Champions.

He often reminisced about the house boat trips he took with his son and brother Bob and his family. Larry had begun to enjoy travel; his trips with Susan included an Alaskan cruise, the Dominican, Salt Spring Island in British Columbia to visit brother Phil and family. In the late 1980s, Larry and Susan took his mother back home to Minonk, Illinois to visit her brothers, making a stop at Mackinac Island where there is no vehicular traffic. He was happy that he wasn’t the electrician pedaling the bicycle and wagon used to transport tools, materials and ladders. Larry’s last trip with Susan was to New Brunswick to visit family, stopping in Prince Edward Island for a few days.

Larry was an electrician by trade and was recently honoured with his 55 year membership pin.

As a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 375, Larry spent many years on the Property Committee helping to keep things running smoothly. He was also a dedicated member of the Poppy Committee, spending long hours planning poppy routes and assisting in the delivery and collection of silent poppy boxes.

Larry’s favourite place to be was at the cottage on Harvey Lake, fishing and enjoying nightly bonfires with many cottage friends, especially in the winter. He worked tirelessly to keep the cottage in good repair and could always be found working to maintain the private road. He was an amazing partner to Susan, of over 25 years, always protective and supportive of her.

Larry always had a smile for his loved ones to match his heart of gold. He was never rushed or in a hurry (this was known as Larry time), and was always happy to share a story or a laugh.

Larry is dearly loved and will be deeply missed by everyone blessed to know him, his family, friends and his loving partner Susan.

Passing of Gary "Chops" Czapinski

December 14, 2013

With great sadness we announce the passing of Gary "Chops" Czapinski. In the 1970s Gary designed shows for the Toronto Optimists and the Seneca Optimists. The famous parachute of the 1977 Seneca Optimists was one of Gary's creations. The idea is said to have been inspired by Czapinski’s walk through an elementary school one day where he saw students doing an exercise routine with a parachute coordinated to music. Gary will be missed by a great many in the Drum Corps and Marching Band communities.

Gary was instrumental in moving along DCI visual design, and he and his wife Marie have judged marching band and drum corps shows for years. Without Gary's nurturing and constant desire to be new, fresh and different, our activity would be very different today. Possibly a little less imaginative, colorful and forward thinking. He is truly one of the master visual "producer/designers" of our time.

Gary is survived by his wife Marie, a drum corps, winter guard and marching band judge who was inducted into the DCI Hall of Fame just this past August.

A celebration of Gary's life will take place for family and friends on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Chicago. A memorial fund has been setup in his honor. Contributions can be made to:

We received this sad message from Gary Duggan ... his brother Bob passed away on Saturday December 15, 2007.

Bob Duggan was an alumnus of De La Salle Drum and Bugle Corps, of its predecessor De La Salle Blue and Gold Band and its successor, Oakland Crusaders Drum Corps. In that regard, he stands alone.

In 1953, as a student at De La Salle College 'Oaklands', Bob joined the De La Salle Blue and Gold Band. He was a member of the Blue and Gold through 1957. When the Band reorganized to become a drum and bugle corps in 1958, Bob was a member of the original De La Salle Drum Corps . He rejoined Del in 1966 as an instructor with the horn line and as a Drum Major.
In the early '70's Bob became corps Director of the Etobicoke Crusaders. He held that position in 1975 when Del and the Crusaders merged. Bob was the original Corps Director of the Oakland Crusaders.

Arrangements are as follows

A notice is to be in the Tuesday Toronto Star.

These connections have made him widely known in Canadian senior band and Drum Corps circles. John will be sadly missed by all who knew him!

Sunday September 23, 2007 was our Annual General Meeting. As part of this meeting votes were to be cast for two amendments to our Constitution and elections were to be held for the two contested positions on our Board.

After some discussion we learned that the corps plans on applying for a Trillium Grant and the Trillium Foundation prefers a larger board of directors. As a result of this discussion both of the proposed amendments to the constitution were withdrawn by the individuals who had suggested them.

Peter Burton and Ron Chong were elected by acclaim as "Directors at Large". Voting was held for the two contested positions. Len Perrin was re-elected as president and Henry Beben was elected as Secretary. There is still a vacant position on the board (Director At Large) since there were not enough candidates to run for all positions. The new board will review the constitution and decide a suitable method for filling this position. Our new Executive consists of:

Many thanks to the members of the previous Board for all of their work over the last year. Congratulations to Len Perrin and Henry Beben who were elected and many thanks to Carol Munro and Ric Brown who, while unsuccessful, expressed their willingness to serve and their commitment to the corps by choosing to run in these elections.

Dress Rehearsal

Now that we have our uniforms, we need to take them out for a test run!

This Sunday, May 6, part of our rehearsal will be devoted to "The Wearing of the Green"

This will allow us to ensure that all Members are wearing our uniform properly, will give you a chance to wear our uniform, thereby eliminating any unforeseen problems at our first performance of the season and affording us the opportunity to get properly prepared for "And the Bands Played On".

This will be treated like any other performance, so you are required to bring your complete uniform, including uniform shoes (Dinkles) and black socks.  Before hand, make sure that your uniform is fitted properly – including sleeves and cuffs properly sized and lightly pressed, as per the instructions given by Henry and Phil when you were issued your uniform.

Hopefully, this will iron out any bugs in our performance and will take care of any unforeseen problems, which normally occur on "Opening Night".

When Simcoe comes around, we'll be ready to crank up the WOW factor!

Important Communication to All Members of the Optimists Alumni Drum Corps
From Len Perrin - President

Dear Fellow Corps Members:

On behalf of your Executive I would like to thank all of you for your support and the trust you have placed in us to lead your organization.  We can only pledge to you, to do our best to continue to progress based on the values and traditions of the Optimists Drum & Bugle Corps.

When the Alumni Corps started in the fall of 2002 we were focused on appearing at the G.A.S. annual convention to be held in Hamilton in May 2004.  This was the commitment that drove the Corps in its early days.  Since that time the Corps has made great strides in improving our collective musical capabilities but we do not have a clear picture of where we want to go and our next milestones.  You, the members have spoken and elected a new Executive body to lead the Corps in its future endeavors and to determine our future direction.  As your President I am convinced that we need to establish a set of realistic goals and how best to achieve them.  I am therefore pleased to advise that your new Board has unanimously agreed to proceed with the development of a Strategic Operating Plan to set the future direction of our Corps.

To be successful in this endeavor it is essential that the plan be based on a consensus of all participants.  Richard Robida has agreed to lead the development of the plan and has the full support of your Executive.  Each of you will be contacted by Richard or one of his committee members to get your input, ideas and opinions.

Thank you for those who have already submitted  the Member Survey form as part of our parade attendance records. This data will be used to keep you involved in this project.  If you have not yet forwarded this information  to our Secretary it is essential that you do so as soon as possible so all interested parties will be included.  Even if you have not committed to be an active member for 2007 we value your opinion and would like to include you in building a consensus for the future of the Optimists Alumni.

I plan to be an active participant in the development of the plan and will keep you posted on our progress.

Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Len Perrin

Update on new uniforms

On November 5th the Board created a committee to investigate and recommend a uniform. Henry Beben and Phil Hennings are the members of that committee. Their goal is to create the best possible uniform and do so at an affordable price.

In the two weeks since the committee was formed:

As a result of their research, they also decided to explore companies in the United States. So far

When they have completed their investigation and have prices, they will submit their report to the Board.
