So does anyone out there know was this the only loss to del that year?

We also lost in the prelims at the Nationals In Waterloo, but won the title by a sliver!and then from what I could gather they won the title , the first national lose by Optimists, by the same margin, ironic!

If I recall correctly, Del also won the 1961 Grape Festival contest.
