March On! ...the history of the
Toronto Optimists Drum & Bugle Corps
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Dave Byrne
Corps: Toronto Optimists
1945 – 2007
Eldest of the Byrne brothers (David, Brian, John & Peter) who all played for the Optimists, Dave played Contra Bass in 1966 and '67, “The Glory Years” as he referred to them. He was part of the Dynamic Trio of Contra’s – Dave, Clayton Keat and Paul Thompson. Dave referred to his Contra mates as “The Twin Towers”. He always boasted that he and his co-contras played real Contras, the Imperials not the smaller ones other corps used. Dave played Baritone and Euphonium for Mighty Grantham prior to coming to the Optimists in 65.
After aging out Dave worked as a case worker and eventually supervisor for Family & Children’s Services in Niagara Region until he retired in the early 90’s.
Dave passed away from heart problems, far too early, in 2007. He maintained his love and passion for Drum Corps till the very end making the watching of the DCI’s an annual ritual and attending those shows whenever they were close enough.
Known for his excellent musicianship, his sense of humour and biting wit, he is missed by all who knew him. Dave is survived by his son Cameron and his brothers Brian, John & Peter. (by John Byrne)
